H. Maurine Steinmetz

H. Maurine (sic) Steinmetz, formerly of Upper Sandusky and Nevada and most recently of Westlake, died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Harborside Nursing Home in Westlake. She was 95.

Born in North Robinson on July 31, 1910, she was a daughter of Harry G. and Mary (Monnett) Smith. She married Edwin "Ted" Steinmetz on April 4, 1936, in Nevada. He died Feb. 11, 1977.

Surviving are a daughter, Janis Briggs, Canterbury, N.H.; seven grandchildren, John Briggs, Sarah Hill, Jennifer Latham, Amy Dissanayke, Wendy Lazor, Jonathon Ward and Robert Ward; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, F.M. Smith, Upper Sandusky. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ward; a great-grandson; and two sisters, Dorothy Smith and Delight DeWalt.

A 1928 graduate of Nevada High School and a 1932 graduate of Bowling Green State University. Mrs. Steinmetz was a homemaker. She taught at Wood County, Willard and Nevada elementary schools, and retired after 27 years.

She attended Trinity Evangelical United Methodist Church, and was a member of the former AEF class.

Mrs. Steinmetz was a member of the Wyandot County Retired Teachers Association and the Ohio State Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, sewing, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.

The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be Nevada Cemetery. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
