Bertha L. Gilliland, 83, of 4318 U.S. 30, Upper Sandusky, died at 4:03 a.m.
Sunday, Sept. 22, 1991, in Marion Community MedCenter Hospital. She had been ill
the past few days.
Born in Eden Township on Nov. 18, 1907, she was a daughter of Jacob and Minerva
(Kuenzli) Schilling. On June 4, 1933, she married Harry Gilliland in her
parents' home in Eden Township. He survives.
Also surviving are three children, Mrs. James (Martha) Jennings Bloom, Alliance;
Mrs. Richard (Marie) Dilley, Westerville; and James, Nevada; three brothers,
Ernest Schilling, Upper Sandusky; John Schilling, Fort Smith, Ark.; and Edward
Schilling, Newark; three sisters, Mrs. Milton (Clara) Hoover, Upper Sandusky;
Mary Burns, Baltimore, Md.; and Mrs. Boyd (Martha) Sobers, Ada; and eight
grandchildren. Four brothers, Henry, Alfred, Homer and Harold, are deceased.
Mrs. Gilliland was a retired elementary school teacher. She taught in Carey
from 1929-33, in Nevada from 1954-55 and at Eden. After retiring in 1965, she
was a substitute teacher in the Upper Sandusky school district for a number of
years. She graduated from Eden High School in 1926 and from Bowling Green State
University in 1928. A life member of Salem United Methodist Church in Eden
Township, Mrs. Gilliland was the church membership secretary for several years
and a member of the Adult Bible Class. She had been a member of Farm Bureau
Northeast Council 6 since 1945.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Salem United Methodist Church, east
of Upper Sandusky, followed by burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Mark
Freer will officiate.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the Upper Sandusky Chapel of Lucas
Funeral Homes, and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Memorials may be made to
Salem UMC, Upper Sandusky Public Library or the donor's favorite charity.
