Nevada Alumni Association has annual banquet

HOLMES TOWNSHIP ó The Nevada Alumni Associationís annual banquet was May 18 at Wynford Elementary School with 133 alumni, faculty and guests present of which 81 were graduates of Nevada High School.

The honored classes were 1953 and 1963. The 1963 class represents the last graduating class from Nevada and therefore, the final 50-year class.

Marsha (Swartzkopf) Gathright and Sandra (Gortner) Stuckman were greeters. Michael Smalley and Ron Scott were at the registration table. Marvin Monroe and his son, Mark, provided music. Rhoda (Ferguson) Webb gave the invocation.

A baked steak dinner was prepared by Katering Kountry Style and served by the Wynford Lady Royals. The Wynford FFA set up the tables.

Ed McClain was master of ceremonies. He introduced his 50-year class members and shared some perspectives of how things have changed from our high school years.

50-year class members present were: Wayne Bare, Bill Clinger, Ed McClain, Ron Scott, Roberts (Chance) Scully, Michael Smalley, and Rhoda (Ferguson) Webb. Unable to attend were John Baker, Norman Boggs, Michael Buckley, Sylvia (Brandt) Crall, Donna (Bloomfield) Forehand, Janis (Neiderhauser) Holdcraft, Gary Kaiser, Cheryl (Reinhart) Leeper, Gerald Logan, Kay (Kellogg) Neilson, Judy Dell (Brown) Rank and Sandra (Clarkson) Stiger. Deceased members of the class of 1963 include: Jim Adams, Bill Best, Ted Caldwell, Charles Cover, Roger Cramer, Barry Jacobs, and Laurelle Lee (Yoxthimer) Pennington.

The attendees from the class of 1953 were: Norma (Monroe) Bowers, Jean (Heistand) Byrd, John Eier, Donald Ekleberry, Wilma (Armburster) Greenwood, Martha (Gilliland) Jennings, Joyce (Farmer) Motter, Paul Motter, James Nordyke, David Schilling, and Janet (Christensen) Theis. Unable to attend were: Jane (Traxler) Deamer, Joel Klink, Gerald Noblit, Robert Sortland, Donald Walter, James Westerman, Noel Williams. The deceased members include; Richard Jeffrey, James Markley, Arden Monroe, Richard Tschantz and Patricia (Best) Zoeller.

Ron Woofter was the only former faculty member present.

A tribute to former Nevada Schools Superintendent Luther Lust, who died June 29, 2012, was presented by Wayne Bare. A moment of silence was held for Lust and additional family of Nevada High School who died this past year.

The Luther Lust Education Scholarship winners for 2013 are Madison Krebs and Eden Smock.

Michael Smalley introduced the Wyandot County Scrapbook website Ed McClain developed. McClain explained the web site,, contains a lot of information regarding Nevada High School, Nevada Class of 1963, history of Nevada, Wyandot County and Wyandot County Schools.

Wilma Burky and Mary Jane Bender will chair the 2014 banquet. A donation of $323 was made to help with next yearís expenses.
